Recent Case in the American Association for Justice’s Professional Negligence Reporter

On Behalf of Shapiro, Cohen & Basinger Trial Lawyers | Aug 15, 2012 | Firm News

According to a recent case report in the American Association for Justice’s Professional Negligence Reporter, a federal court in Canton, Ohio recently awarded the family of an 80 year old nursing home resident $1.93 million dollars. Apparently the patient was given medication that wasn’t ordered for her which then caused hypoglycemia-very low blood sugar- resulting in permanent brain damage that eventually led to her death. The nursing home’s medication cart was disorganized and the facility was understaffed. The 80 year old patient was survived by four adult children. The verdict included $1.25 million in punitive damages.

In Illinois, punitive damages are banned in medical negligence cases. The legislature also repealed a law that used to provide for treble damages in nursing home abuse cases. Despite these obstacles, the attorneys at Shapiro, Cohen and Basinger, Ltd. have successfully handled nursing home abuse cases. If your loved ones have suffered serious injuries or death due to nursing home neglect or nursing home abuse, give us a call. We believe that our sick and elderly parents and grandparents should be treated with respect and dignity and we will fight for their rights.
